MORDRED NIMUE

Born on a planet ravaged by civil war and adopted as a Mandalorian foundling, Mordred had barely completed their training when a routine mission gone awry led them to be trapped in stasis for 15 years, awakening to a world they no longer recognise. Left completely alone, they travel the galaxy as a bounty hunter and learn to appreciate everything life has to offer.

BASIC TRAITS

Mordred was born in 60BBY. At the start of the Clone Wars, they are biologically 24, though chronologically 39- they were frozen at 19 in 41BBY and awoke in 26BBY.Mordred is the same unnamed near-human species as Dryden Vos. Their facial markings are connected to their circulatory and nervous systems, and flush red in reaction to extreme emotions.Mordred is aroace and nonbinary, although these are not labels they would use to describe themselves. They’ve never identified ‘as’ any gender, and although they use they/them as ‘default’ pronouns, they feel disconnected from gender and will respond to any pronouns. They’ve never had any interest in romance or sex- they’re not repulsed by either, they’re simply things that they don’t take part in.Mordred speaks both Mando’a and Basic fluently, but defaults to Mando'a.

PERSONALITY

At their core, Mordred is extremely practical and logical- they believe whatever makes the most logical sense based on the information they have available to them. They're very straightforward about everything they do, and they're all action- if they're given a task to do it will get done.Mordred is a classic introvert, preferring their own company. They can come off as shy and withdrawn, having been taught to suppress anything that didn't benefit their clan. They're often distrustful, being very protective of both their emotional and physical boundaries. Affection is something they are unfamiliar with, and find overwhelming, leading to them often inadvertently seeming cold. Despite this, they deeply crave connection, longing to know what it's like to be seen as an individual person and not a unit. They're very stubborn, often about trivial things, to the point that it can frustrate other people. Wrestling them into accepting medical care is a tough task- they still experience pain from their injuries, having had a significant portion of their chest to midsection scarred, which they go to great efforts to hide.Mordred is autistic, which is especially obvious in their social skills- they speak with a flat affect, and struggle to read between the lines in social situations, taking people at face value. Their routines and rituals might seem strange and random to strangers, but to them, they’re perfectly logical.

RELATIONSHIPS

BURC'YA
Burc'ya, or Boo, is Mordred's dinosaur companion, specifically based on a latenivenatrix. Less of a pet than an equal, they meet and bond during a traumatic capture and subsequent prison escape- Mordred was captured due to their possession of knowledge that was previously thought to have died with the rest of their clan, and Boo was being used for cloning experiments, inspired by the Republic's clobnes. Burc'ya is curious and often sticking her nose into trouble, which leads Mordred to form bonds they otherwise wouldn't while chasing after her messes. Despite her playful nature, Boo is nonetheless a dangerous predator. Mordred is extremely protective of her, and vice versa.
It's unknown exactly what species Burc'ya is- Tech hypothesises that she must come from a planet so far into the Outer Rim or even wild space that she has no hope of reuniting with her own kind.
PHEE
Mordred meets Phee when they begin taking missions from Cid, shortly after the end of the Clone Wars. Phee immediately takes a liking to Mordred; she recognises that Mordred is very lonely and makes an effort to always provide them with company- often dragging them along on treasure hunts which Mordred enjoys for the opportunity to see the galaxy, even if they insist at first that they're in it for the money. Despite their opposite personalities, Mordred and Phee play off of each other well, often playfully bickering. As they grow closer, Mordred will often interject into Phee's stories with their own unbelievably embellished details, in such a deadpan tone it's unclear to most people if they're joking or not.

TECH
Out of all of the Bad Batch, Mordred has the closest relationship with Tech. When Tech that Mordred was stuck in cryostasis, he is extremely curious about their experience and begins bombarding them with questions. Initially, Mordred is very overwhelmed by this, but gradually they open up; Tech is curious to learn about Mandalorian culture from them, and Mordred realises Tech is a bank of knowledge that they never had the opportunity to learn due to their clan's strict rules about interacting with the outside galaxy. Tech isn't put off by Mordred's reserved nature- he appreciates their willingness to sit and listen to him talk, and doesn't expect them to speak at all if they don't feel like it. Through Tech, Mordred discovers their own interests- Tech allows them to trawl through his databases of galactic fauna and his recordings of animal sounds. Eventually, Tech becomes the person Mordred is most talkative around, helped by Tech's effort to speak Mando'a around them- although he tells them it's for his own practise, it's also an attempt to help them feel more comfortable. With both of them being autistic, neither of them judge the other for traits others perceive as 'strange'; they provide for each other a safe space to express themselves.

EARLY LIFE

Mordred was born on an Outer Rim world ravaged by civil war- orphaned at a young age, they were adopted as a foundling by a clan of nomadic Mandalorians who had initially landed on their planet to scavenge any remaining resources.Life in the clan was tough; living a dangerous lifestyle and not sticking around in one place for too long led the clan to intensely train their apprentices and push them to the limit. Despite being very open to taking in orphaned foundlings to bolster their ranks, the clan was incredibly hostile to outside cultures; any such contact was all but forbidden, with some exceptions for fellow Mandalorian groups. Their distrust of outsiders also led to strict rules for the members of the clan- their helmets could only be removed in the presence of other clan members, and telling their first name to outsiders was strongly discouraged.Among the apprentices, individuality was strongly discouraged, as they were expected to dedicate their life to the benefits of the clan. The children were treated as one unit and given no individual attention, living together in shared quarters and solely focusing on their training, while competition was strongly encouraged. The foundlings were raised with the belief that the harsh training was for their own good; those who fell behind wouldn't survive the clan's demanding lifestyle.

Despite being no less capable than their clanmates, Mordred was the runt of the litter, being small, quiet and ‘odd’ compared to the others- they quickly learned to take advantage of their small size in combat, relying on speed and stealth. Their odd behaviour and small stature meant they had to train harder than the other apprentices just to keep up, desperate to prove themself. Being seen as strange, they were often the target of the trainers’ wrath and gradually learned that it was better to make themselves as quiet and invisible as possible. Despite this, Mordred remained deeply loyal, having taught that they should feel grateful for having been rescued, and should therefore repay it by dedicating their life to the clan.It was in 41BBY, when Mordred had finally fully completed their training and started to prove their worth as a full fledged warrior, that a routine mission went wrong- while retrieving weapons from an abandoned outpost, an alien creature, the same one that had ravaged the outpost, stowed away and went on a rampage inside the clan’s ship. Mordred and two other young warriors sustained serious injuries early on and were put into cryosleep, ready to be returned to the nearest civilised planet for medical attention. However, they never reached their destination- the whole clan had been wiped out en route, as their ship drifted through space for fifteen years. Although the other two warriors succumbed to poisoning as a result of the long cryosleep, Mordred somehow survived, waking up when the medical systems onboard the ship finally failed. Upon realising that they were mortally wounded, they had to make the choice to either send out a distress signal, betraying their clan's principles, or die like the rest of them. They chose the former, being picked up by a diplomatic convoy and receiving the medical care they need before striking out alone as a bounty hunter.

POST-CRYOSTASIS

Up until the Clone Wars, Mordred continues their bounty hunting both to get by and as a distraction, refusing to let other people get close to them as they struggle with survivor’s guilt, feeling lost and aimless without the constant direction from their clan’s leaders. They take jobs from anyone, including both the Republic and CIS- their loyalty is to themselves and their own survival. Without fully realising it, they start to reclaim pieces of individuality- they grow their hair out, paint their armour and decorate their ship. Not long into the war, they’re recruited by the Nite Owls due to their combat skills and knowledge of pre-civil war Mandalorian culture; they agree out of a desire to reconnect to their roots and a longing for familiarity and structure. However, this only lasts a brief time- they quickly realise that Mandalorians are not the same as they once were, and make the choice to leave.
